The Collection Captain is responsible for making sure that all recycle racks around the muster field and camping area are ready to receive any cans and bottles from people passing by. The Collection Captains can be especially helpful by knowing when the Sorting Parties are going to happen and getting as many bags of cans and bottles cued up to get sorted as early as possible.
As Collection Captain, you can do this collection work on your own, with a buddy, or with a team as a specific shift.
1. Supplies and materials: are stored at the Green Team Headquarters. Pick up replacement bags, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, or soap as needed. ***When working with teams of young kids, please supply them with rubber gloves and help them stay clean.
2. Gather & organize your team: if you’re working with a team of collection helpers, it’s helpful to send kids out in pairs or threes to swap out bags. Give them a specific area to patrol. They will make multiple trips from full racks to the HQ staging area.
3. Remove bags full of recyclable material from the recycling rack. Replace plastic bags with back up bags tied to the wire rack. These plastic bags are stored in the Green Team supply area. Feel free to tie 2-3 bags on each rack as back up.
NOTE on bag sizes: there are two different sized racks that we use at the larger musters
4. Carry full bags to the Green Team HQ – the designated storage area next to the dumpster. When it is time to separate out the glass, aluminum, and plastic, we will open up these bags and sort (for details please see How To Sort) Please DO NOT throw bags into the dumpster at DRAM.
5. Be KIND and RESPECTFUL. Sometimes people may not understand what you are doing or why, that's OK. It's taken some time to spread the word about Green Team and we may still have the opportunity to tell our story. If you run into difficulty explaining anything, come find another Green Team member to help.
6. Using the Recycling Dumpster at the Deep River Ancient Muster (DRAM): We are very grateful to the DRAM Committee for leading the way! Every year since 2009 the committee has designated one special dumpster for materials that are recyclable - not trash. All material that can not be redeemed for money can be thrown into this recycling dumpster. This is one way we are all helping to reduce the landfill load from our musters and community gatherings. Feel free to encourage any event participants to separate out their non-redeemable recyclables to toss into the dumpster.
Check for the redemption label: Bottles made of plastic or glass will have a message printed on their label. Aluminum cans will have one carved into the tops. Redemption laws are specific to states: Only cans and bottles marked with the state in which you are planning to redeem will be accepted at the redemption center. There are some exceptions.
7. Celebrate & appreciate! THANK EACH OF THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU and make sure their names are written on the Green Team clipboard in the supply area. If you can snap a shot during the action, that's great too! Have fun - know that each of you is making a difference. Thank you!

- Small wire racks take 33 gallon bags - these are the standard racks we're using.
- Large green leaf bag racks take 40 gallon bags - there are only 6 of these in use.
